Thread: its been awhile

  1. Default its been awhile

i havent been on the site for quite some time. i resently became a father and havent had much time for my rebuild. now that my daughter is more capable of keeping herself occupied im getting started on the rebuild again. the farme is powdercoated i just have to find some origanal handlebars, seat, and the whole brake system. my dad might have the gooseneck for it he said that when i first got the bike we pulled some of the parts off because the were in bad shape. i was woundering what you guys do to retore rims and crank componets? can i remove the accual crank from the shaft? the crank is fine but the shaft is pretty beat up and rusty.

Congrats on becoming Father, takes a lot of your time indeed. I know some people, depending on the rim material send them off to be re-chomed/re-anodised but I guess it depends how bad they are or what you want to achieve. As for the crank component, most you can remove the race and replace it, especially if the bearing side is past it.

the rims need to be straightened a bit and spokes replaced. is that something i could do myself or am i better off taking it in to a shop? i was thinking of powdercoating them blue with chrome spokes but not sure if it will hold up since the rims take the most beating on a ride. had to look up crank componants to give a better idea of what im trying to dicribe. the crank arms are what i was refuring to. they are the only rusty part but if the race is all i can replace then there isnt much hope for them.

I'd probably take the rims somewhere to be straightened but as for re-spoking it's not that hard, the fun bit is the truing and understanding how and where tightening a spoke impacts. Personally I'd never power rims, especially if you're riding them but since I've never had them coated this way I couldn't comment on that one having no experience. Might be worth getting some pictures up so we can see exactly what you're refering to.

will take rims in then. ill also see if the shop sends parts out for finish it might be easyer if they do. as far as having my rims blue what kind of finish would that be? i work at a factory that has parts anodized and as far as i know thats only black, clear, bronse, and brass finish. that might just be the company we deal with though. ill just send the crank and chain wheel in and have it all done. might as well have it all look new. thanks for all your help guys.
